Аннотация:New ultrasound technology allows the observation of fine grained fetal movements and their development over time.A fine grained coding system, the Fetal Observable Movement System (FOMS) enables the recording of fetal movements and carefully chosen statistical models show the development in complexity of these movements such as the developmental progression in the "cry-face" gestalts. The development of such gestalts in utero is beneficial for early social interaction as babies who can show recognizable emotional and communicative expressions earlier obtain advantage.Potential applications of this research will be discussed including the evaluation of healthy brain function of the fetus.Fetuses showing no or slow developmental progression would be flagged.Effects of prenatal stimulation with sound and light speak to the debate of the prenatal to postnatal divide and precursors of cognitive development.Effects of toxins, such as nicotine, can be identified in terms of the fetal movement profile.Parental bond-ing can be improved in that especially fathers of the fetus often express this view saying that: "seeing their baby helps them to bond" thereby improving the prenatal attachment to the fetus which is hypothesized to increase health behaviours.
