Аннотация:In this polemical piece, the author attempts to diagnose the state of the art of poetry in the context of the global market as a dominant social value system. He finds that poetry as a fundamental human need for freedom, is based on the concept of “freedom of meaning”, not “freedom” of the market. The “free market” is for him a misnomer which conceals the contemporary global dependence on profit and a hectic way of life in the pursuit of profit. This is to the detriment of poetry which while never profitable contains the seeds of what it is to be human. However, while poetry does not (co-)exist with the market, even this fact is worthy of being recorded in poetry. Thus poets have to deal with the contemporary situation by re-inventing themselves, and finding new (modern, even market) means of solving poetic questions, following the advice of Vasko Popa and the example of the poet of the advertisement, Dušan Radović.
