Аннотация:In Japan the continual rise in the number of people moving to Tokyo is causing serious economic and social problems, including high office rents, housing shortages, traffic jams, and obligatory long‐distance commuting. To try to curb this influx of people into Tokyo, government agencies and private companies have set up projects and research groups to study how to implement the distributed office. This article discusses an actual teleworking environment. We analyze the characteristics and roles of technology in communications between teleworkers. First, we introduce the communication systems employed in our distributed offices. Then we analyze the use of moving plictures within our videoconferencing system. Based on this analysis, we discuss the roles of this medium in communication between remote workers. Finally, we propose a way to evaluate the feasibility of videoconferencing and other multimedia communication systems.
