His books include Heaven, Hell and the Victorians (Cambridge University Press), Ruskin's God (Cambridge University Press), The Old Enemies: Catholic and Protestant in Nineteenth-Century English Culture (Cambridge University Press) and St John and the Victorians (Cambridge University Press). He is a former Lay Canon and member of Chapter of Winchester Cathedral, where he curated the exhibition, ‘Reading the Book of Books, Then and Now: The King James Bible, 1611–2011’. He is a Trustee of Gladstone's Library and is currently writing the official bicentenary history of the Athenæum Club and its political, intellectual and cultural hinterland.
