Аннотация:In the last decade, pediatricians and child psychiatrists as well as nurses, social workers, psychologists, and educators have become increasingly aware that illness and hospitalization can threaten a child's mental and emotional development. These professionals will be attracted by this book which attempts to give a comprehensive and critical review of the literature on the psychological effects of illness and hospitalization on children. Studies of short term hospitalization and the effects of operative procedures form the main material of the review. The authors were selective and chose articles that focused on structured research rather than case studies. They found a good amount of unpublished material—mainly dissertations—which enrich the bibliography of over 250 titles. Some foreign—mainly British—publications are included, be it because of the trend of greater awareness in English-speaking countries or of our disinclination to read and review other languages.
