Objectively Assessed Physical Activity in 20-85-y-old Norwegiansстатья из журнала
Аннотация: Level of physical activity and adherence to physical activity recommendations have traditionally been based on self-report measures. Such measures have shown substantial overestimation of time spent in moderate and vigorous activity. In order to overcome this methodological problem one can use objective measures of physical activity. There is, however, a lack of studies in the adult population measuring physical activity with objective devices. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the physical activity level in adults and elderly (20-85 yrs), and determine the percentage meeting the national recommendations for physical activity, using accelerometers. METHODS: The study was a multi-centre study involving 10 university colleges in Norway, and included 3464 participants (53% women). Physical activity was assessed with the ActiGraph GT1M accelerometer for seven consecutive days. Total activity was expressed as mean counts per minute (cpm) and recommendations was met by reaching 30 minutes of daily moderate and vigorous activity, accumulated in bouts of 8-10 minutes. Differences between groups were analyzed using independent-sample T-test. P-values ≤ 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: No gender difference in total activity was observed (333 cpm for women vs 329 cpm for men). Total activity was relatively stable across age groups, however, a marked decline was seen after 70 years. Twenty percent of the population met the recommendations, and the percentage was higher among women compared to men (22% vs 18%, respectively, p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: This is one of the first studies to apply objective measures of physical activity to a large population-based sample, and the data provide novel insight to the activity patterns of adults and elderly in Norway. Knowing the health benefits of regular physical activity, it is concerning that only 1 of 5 met the current recommendations for physical activity.
