Аннотация: Traditional Japanese clothing has been not merely a consumer good, but a medium that makes us aware of our relationship with nature. Textiles have enveloped the body as a second skin, expressed human eroticism in art and literature, played a role in ritual as mediators between humans and gods, and conveyed the human soul - woven or dyed into their fabric - into the outside world. In this collection of essays, some written for academic audiences and others published in magazines for the general reader, Professor Tanaka considers the meanings of cloth in an earlier age in traditional societies of South America and Asia, the motifs linking man and nature such as the Tree of Life, the changes in the human relationship with nature and cloth wrought by the Industrial Revolution, and the efforts of Gandhi, William Morris, and, in Japan, Yanagi Muneyoshi to preserve handicrafts. Of particular interest is the author's look at the interactions of the Japanese with cloth in daily life before mass-produced objects replaced handmade goods. Under such rubrics objects replaced handmade goods. Under such rubrics as wrapping, winding, tying and untying, bags, and rags, material culture is placed within the larger context of Japanese society - scraps of fabric used in patchwork or on tobacco pouches and the like occurring within a culture of fragments also seen in Japanese literature and ukiyoe, for example - and the immensity of what has been lost in our modern throwaway culture becomes obvious.
