Аннотация:В статье исследуются философско-теологические толкования сущности нескольких групп римских богов: пенатов, ларов и Novensiles, которые упоминаются в главах 38-42 третьей книги апологии Арнобия, с целью определения источников. В результате сравнений текстов Арнобия, Аврелия Августина, Макробия и Сервия автор приходит к выводу об общем источнике у двух последних авторов. Непосредственным источником труда Арнобия было латинское сочинение энциклопедического характера, а его первоисточниками были произведения римских анналистов и антикваров.
The article explores the philosophical and theological interpretations of the essence of several groups of Roman gods ( penates , lares and Novensiles ) reported in chapters 38-42 of the third book of Arnobius’ apology Adversus nationes libri septem , in order to determine his sources. Various points of view of researchers on this issue are considered. The author expresses doubt about the widespread point of view that Arnobius used Cornelius Labeo’s works as his main direct source. A comparison of the texts of Arnobius, Aurelius Augustine, Macrobius and Servius leads to a conclusion about the common source of the last two authors and the common archetype for all listed authors. Arnobius’ immediate source was a Latin composition of an encyclopedic nature, and his primary sources were the works of annalists and antiquaries. Philosophical interpretations of the essence of penates , lares and Novensiles attested in Arnobius’ work are valuable pieces of theological thought, based on early and reliable sources.
